Galore Theatre Company are bringing a series of Adult Acting Workshops to The Flavel this spring/summer.  

‘Galore Theatre Company is a vibrant, community-focused theatre group based in South Devon, working with both young people and adult actors across a range of projects and performances. Alongside our thriving youth theatre, we are really keen to create opportunities for adults to explore acting in a supportive environment.

Our adult workshops are designed for anyone aged 18+ who is curious about acting - whether you’re completely new or returning after time away. Sessions are relaxed and friendly, focusing on building confidence, developing skills and technique and enjoying the process without pressure.

Over six weeks, participants will explore character, voice, movement and simple scene work through engaging, accessible exercises, learning at their own pace while gaining a solid foundation in performance.

Each workshop will end with an optional showcase performance, offering the chance to share what’s been developed’.

Lend your voice to a chorus of hearty tunes for an evening of sea shanties in aid of local lifeboat crews and the Flavel.

Performances will be from ALL HANDS-ON DECK and THE TOTNES SEA GALS

Dart RNLI is one of the busiest lifeboat stations in Devon, on call to emergencies in the Dart Estuary all the way up to Totnes and out to sea. Facing fast-moving water, constant traffic on the river, a tidal estuary, and coastal conditions like swell and exposure to the elements, the lifeboat crew respond to all kinds of rescues. But they can’t do it alone.

These brave volunteers rely on the generous support of caring people like you. Their current station is a temporary building at the end of its lease and, to continue saving lives, they need your help to fund the £1.2M cost of their new lifesaving home.

RNLI Torbay’s crew have been saving lives in the waters in and around Torbay and out into the English Channel in all weathers for over 150 years.

Dramatically Different Youth Theatre is a fun, energetic drama group where young people can grow, explore, and express themselves. Students build confidence, discover their voice, and form genuine friendships in a supportive, creative environment.

This is a drama-focused group with less emphasis on musical theatre and more emphasis on performance skills such as improvisation and devising, physical theatre, voice and characterisation, writing and script work.

This group is perfect for anyone who wants to develop acting skills, stretch their imagination, and enjoy the excitement of performance.

Director and facilitator, Rachel Swain, is an award-winning Youth Theatre Practitioner, with over 25 years teaching experience, Rachel writes original Youth Theatre productions to ensure all young people have their moment to shine. Her youth group ‘Dramatically Different Brixham’ has been the resident Youth Theatre in Brixham for over 10 years and ‘Dramatically Different Teignmouth’ has been a huge success since it was established in 2019.

Suitable for ages 7 to 18 years There are two weekly sessions on a Wednesday - please make sure you book into the correct session. The earlier group at 4pm will be for younger children and the later group at 5.15pm will be for the older age group, but we are very happy to vary this depending on what suits your individual child, so please contact us if you wish to discuss.

We are presenting a series of inspiring talks by some truly amazing individuals who are Explorers in their chosen field.

In April we are delighted to welcome Belinda Kirk: The First Woman to Row Around Great Britain

Belinda Kirk is an explorer, author, and the leading voice promoting the benefits of adventure on wellbeing. For the past thirty years, Belinda’s personal and professional life have revolved around adventure. Belinda has walked across Nicaragua, searched for camels in China’s Desert of Death, discovered ancient rock paintings in Lesotho, pioneered inclusive expeditions for people with disabilities, and gained a Guinness World Record for rowing unsupported around Britain. As an expert expedition leader and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Belinda has also managed remote trips for Bear Grylls, Chris Ryan and Ray Mears, among others. In 2009, Belinda launched Explorers Connect, a non-profit organisation connecting people to adventures and has encouraged over 30,000 ordinary people to discover a world of outdoor challenges.

Belinda will talk about her Guinness World Record attempt to lead the first women to row around the UK. Belinda's talk will inspire people of all ages to take on the impossible, and how to cope when things go wrong. Her focus is on the importance of goal setting, managing intimidating problems and daring to fail. It is Belinda’s belief that we are capable of more than we think we are: adventure has given her the ability to tackle problems that seem monumental and she will share her tools on how everyone can do the same. She will also speak about how she originally built her resilience and coping mechanisms through relatively small adventures in the UK. Expect inspiring tales of adventure: including becoming the first woman to row around Great Britain (acknowledged as the most difficult ocean row completed, only 15 people have succeeded in history) but also building confidence on small adventurous challenges in the UK.

Book your place and join in on the hugely successful life drawing workshops at the Flavel. It's a wonderful opportunity to draw alongside Helena and practice one of the fundamental skills of art.

The workshops are for all abilities. Helena will be available to provide individual feedback and help as necessary. The sessions are divided into the first part of short poses, ranging from 1 - 20 minute poses, a short break and then one long pose for around 55 minutes.

Information on what you need:

Please bring materials that you would like to draw with; ideally some charcoal (compressed and willow), coloured soft pastels, soft pencil (2B or softer) and a rubber. If you have your own paper/sketchbook then please bring that too.

Drawing boards will be provided and sheets of A2 cartridge paper is available to buy in cash on the day - 4 sheets for £1. There will also be some basic materials available on the day in exchange for a cash donation.

After the fall of France, Coastal Forces were a critical part of our defences, protecting convoys coming from America.  Hear about the fast, heavily armed small boats (less than 100 ft long), that they used to combat the feared German E boats.  A clandestine unit, the 15th Flotilla, operated secretly from 1942-45 taking secret agents to Brittany and returning with escaped POWs. The 23rd Flotilla manned by Free French Navy, were based in Kingswear, some of whom married local women after the war.  All units were professionally supported by the WRNS, trained to take on tasks that would release men for the frontline. Dartmouth was one of only 10 bases along the South Coast, operated by Coastal Forces at HMS Cicala, formerly the Royal Dart Hotel.

On the evening of May 9th, the Flavel Bistro is opening its doors to celebrate one of the country’s leading tribute acts ‘Rocket Max’ coming to The Flavel Arts Centre. We will be serving a pre-show supper at 6pm starting with a chicken, apricot, and almond tagine served with herby couscous and tahini yoghurt followed by a delectable chocolate orange mousse. The perfect start to an absolutely rockin’ evening filled with all the hits of Elton John.

Richard Durrant is a composer and recording artist who defies categorisation. He is one of the leading guitar virtuosos of his generation who, uniquely, performs standing up.

The Comic Strip presents…

Making its debut in November 1982 on Channel 4, The Comic Strip Presents is an ongoing project by a group of prominent comedians including Adrian Edmondson, Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Alexi Sayle and Peter Richardson, although at the time many of them were just starting out on their careers, since it’s conception it attracted an incredible array of well-known stars and directors creating some forty short films and full length cinema productions and became a legendary success.

       

We are delighted to present a selection of these cult comedy classics that all have a unique connection to Devon and the local areas which were used as locations.

Peter Richardson who starred in and produced many episodes will be in conversation over two special nights with stars from the show.

The thought of invisibility, and the advantages it could bring to someone, has captured the imagination of millions since HG Wells’ classic story was first published. The Invisible Man has been adapted many times for film, but rarely for the stage. This original, fast-paced and riotous

adaptation boasts 15 characters, played by just three energetic actors, aided by quick and silly costume changes, prop manipulation, whacky imagination and tons of tongue-and-cheek fun!

Mozart’s fantastical opera glitters in David McVicar’s enchanting production. Young Dart Voices is a brand-new youth choir for ages 11-19, which launched in January 2026 at The Flavel Arts Centre in Dartmouth. Led by Jeremy Kenyon, the new Director of Music for the Benefice of Dartmouth and Elle Miles, the choir offers an uplifting and inclusive space for young people to sing music from a variety of genres, build confidence, and make new friends through music.
