Dartmouth 1945 – ‘Local Memories of a troubled time’

Filmed and Directed by Ian Phillips

With grateful thanks to Dartmouth Museum, who provided all the photos & archive film footage.

This incredible film gives a fascinating insight into the contrasts between life in Dartmouth before and after the war. Ian Phillips interviews local residents who remember the changes in industry, shopping, employment, education, leisure, etc. It also looks at the impact of the part that Dartmouth played in the preparation for the D-Day landings, with ‘all roads into the town full of American soldiers’. There are some wonderful photos and film clips, together with all sorts of interesting, often humorous anecdotes from: Dulcie Pook, John Distin, Jenny Dunn, Terry Dunn, John Bowden, Wally Fleet

Friday @ The Flavel: Roll Over Beethoven with John Suchet

Roll Over Beethoven! with John Suchet

(extraordinary stories behind the music you will hear)

John Suchet, the Flavel’s Honorary Patron, talks about the Beethoven pieces in the 2025 International Classical Series: The ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Waldstein’ sonatas and the ‘Andante Favori’. Not a detailed analysis but rather a fascinating insight into how these pieces came to be written - the personalities behind the music. If you enjoyed his talk at the Book Festival, this covers different ground but is equally insightful, delivered in John’s usual engaging style.

John covered world events for ITN, presenting News at Ten and all ITN news bulletins. In 2008 the Royal Television Society awarded John its highest accolade, a Lifetime Achievement Award. A regular presenter on Classic FM, he is an acknowledged authority on Ludwig van Beethoven and has sold over 23,000 copies of 'Beethoven: The Man Revealed'. His new book (no 8), 'In Search of Beethoven', was published in October and copies will be on sale tonight. Come and hear John talk, ask him to sign your book and enjoy a glass of wine with him afterwards.

Macbeth: David Tennant & Cush Jumbo

David Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch) and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife, Criminal Record) lead a stellar cast in an ‘enthralling’ (★★★★★ Daily Telegraph) new production of Shakespeare’s MACBETH, filmed live at the Donmar Warehouse in London, especially for the big screen.

Unsettling intimacy and brutal action combine at breakneck speed as Max Webster (Life of Pi, Henry V) directs this tragic tale of love, murder, and nature’s power of renewal. With staging ‘full of wolfish imagination and alarming surprise’ (★★★★★ The Guardian), the immersive 5.1 cinema surround sound places the audience inside the minds of the Macbeths, asking are we ever really responsible for our actions?
