BRNC: Flavel Bistro Pre-show Supper

On June 1st the Flavel Arts Centre will be welcoming back one of our absolute favourites, the Britannia

Royal Naval College Concert Band, who will be wowing us with their performance of ‘Heroes and Villains’

taking us on a journey through the big screen and well-known film scores.

To celebrate, the Flavel Bistro will be serving a pre-show supper. To begin we will have slow cooked lamb

with apricots, served with a sumac yoghurt sauce, herb couscous and flatbreads (vegetarian option available), followed by a seasonal

roasted peach and vanilla fool. There are limited numbers in the bistro, so book your place for this

fabulous evening now.

Folk at The Flavel: Cara Dillon and Sam Lakeman

Cara Dillon, an extraordinary, multiple award-winning Irish folk singer, and acclaimed musician and producer Sam Lakeman, will captivate listeners once again with their exquisite and enthralling live performance. Every note and word sung with a passion and confidence earned through a life of experience singing traditional songs. Throughout an enviable career which has seen them explore opportunities to tread many different paths – from releasing folk crossover albums on indie label Rough Trade; recording on Disney soundtracks; to collaborations with orchestras and even leading dance DJs – Cara has continuously chosen to firmly plant herself within the landscape of her Irish cultural heritage and that’s something to celebrate.  

Their enduring partnership has ensured they have remained at the very pinnacle of the folk genre for well over two decades and this performance will feature a selection of acoustic songs from previous releases and may also include material from her highly anticipated 2024 release, “Coming Home”, her first in over six years. Within it Cara effortlessly blurs the lines between spoken word and song to stunning effect, exploring profoundly personal memories, her native Co. Derry and the people, places and customs she holds closest to her heart; revealing a newly found freedom to express herself within the tiniest of details and life’s larger mysteries. Join Cara and Sam for an intimate evening full of exceptional music and the genuine warmth they bring to the stage.

Starring Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Tashi's husband, a champion player on a losing streak, faces off against the washed-up Patrick - his former best friend and Tashi's former boyfriend, and Tashi must ask herself, what will it cost to win.

Freud's Last Session

On the eve of the Second World War, two of the greatest minds of the twentieth century, C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud converge for their own personal battle over the existence of God. The film interweaves the lives of Freud and Lewis, past, present, and through fantasy, bursting from the confines of Freud’s study on a dynamic journey.

ADAM DYER - ‘And all that Jazz Piano’

Adam Dyer and his wife Katerina Paul (violin) gave a very well received recital at the Flavel in 2017 and now Adam makes a welcome return to one of our ‘Happy Hour’ concerts to give a fascinating introduction to the history of the techniques and styles of jazz piano, including examples from Fats Waller, Erroll Garner, Keith Jarrett and many more.

Brought up as a teenager in Kingswear, Adam graduated from Christ’s College, Cambridge and, subsequently, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Having played classical music from the age of seven, he took to playing jazz piano in his mid-teens. Following his time at the Guildhall he gained a scholarship to study jazz in Scandinavia for two years. He now lives in London but often returns to Devon for holidays with his young family.

HELENA CLEWS – LANDSCAPE / COLOUR WORKSHOPS

An exciting series of workshops exploring different approaches and techniques to create stunning artwork.

The workshops will focus on the use of colour, line, and texture using a variety of different starting points. We will work in a variety of different materials, including inks, pastels and mainly acrylic paints.

All abilities are welcome and attending a previous course is wonderful but not necessary.

The Concert Band of Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth will perform a selection of soundtracks from some of the most well known Heroes and Villains movies that have ever hit the Box Office!

These world recognised themes include soundtracks from Batman, Thunderbirds, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, The A-Team, James Bond, Stingray and many more! As ever, the Band will have a few surprises up their sleeves for you, so stand by for a thrilling evening of music and excitement.

THE TROUBLE WITH JESSICA

Sarah and Tom are in terrible financial trouble. On the brink of losing everything, they’ve managed to find a buyer for their stylish London home. When their best friends Richard and Beth come round for a final dinner, an uninvited old friend, Jessica, tags along.  After a seemingly trivial argument, Jessica hangs herself in the garden. Tom goes to call the police when Sarah realizes if the buyer finds out, the sale will collapse, meaning definite financial ruin. The only solution - to convince Richard and Beth to take Jessica’s body to her flat and make it look like she killed herself there. If they’re clever enough about it, what could possibly go wrong?

The Romans laid out over 250,000 miles of roads, 10,000 miles of which were here in Britain.

Steve will cover what we know about the network, how the routes were laid out and constructed, how to find lost Roman roads. And an ingenious experiment involving fungus (yes - fungus) and to emphasise the importance of good roads we’ll look, just for fun, at the salesman’s biggest problem.

WICKED LITTLE LETTERS

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark and absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, the film follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding. When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women - led by Police Officer Gladys Moss - begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.
