Flook (15)

Folk at the Flavel welcomes back for a second visit Flook, one of the legendary folk bands of the late 1990's and early 2000's.

After forming in 1997, Flook had a remarkably successful performing and recording career. The sheer enjoyment of playing together shone through their albums but was also a key factor in their very successful live shows. Three studio albums, "Flatfish" released in 1999, "Rubai" in 2002 and "Haven" in 2005 were all critically acclaimed and they won the accolade of Best Group at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2006, having previously been nominated for Best Album. After a long hiatus they reformed a few years ago and in 2019 released a new album, “Ancora”. This was brilliantly received and was nominated in the best album category at the BBC Radio 2 folk awards. Flook are: flautists Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen, guitarist Ed Boyd and bodhran maestro, John Joe Kelly. They weave and spin traditionally rooted tunes into an enthralling sound, with agile but tight rhythms and virtuoso improvisation.

Flook possesses a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination. The rapport between these four musicians, and the sheer enjoyment they developed in playing together, is second to none. There is no shortage of virtuosity amongst the members of Flook, but the unique impact of this sensational Anglo-Irish group stems from the wholly intuitive, almost symbiotic, exchange between the musicians.
