Exhibition on Screen: Dawn of Impressionism: Paris, 1874 (TBC)

The Dawn of Impressionism: Paris, 1874

The Impressionists are the most popular group in art history - millions flock every year to marvel at their masterpieces. But, to begin with, they were scorned, penniless outsiders. 1874 was the year that changed everything; the first Impressionists, ‘hungry for independence’, broke the mould by holding their own exhibition outside official channels. Impressionism was born and the art world was changed forever.

What led to that first groundbreaking show 150 years ago? Who were the maverick personalities that wielded their brushes in such a radical and provocative way? The spectacular Musée d’Orsay exhibition brings fresh eyes to this extraordinary tale of passion and rebellion. The story is told not by historians and curators but in the words of those who witnessed the dawn of Impressionism: the artists, press and people of Paris, 1874.

See the show that changed everything on the big screen

.

Made in close collaboration with the Musee d’Orsay and National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. Directed by Ali Ray. Produced by Phil Grabsky

Folk at The Flavel : Harbottle & Jonas

Harbottle & Jonas + The Wild Goose Choir

Partners in life and music, dynamic Devon based folk duo Harbottle & Jonas are one of the most exciting acts on the UK circuit today, combining a love of the richness of traditional folk with their own original and powerful songwriting. Dave and Freya have developed a distinct and compelling signature sound, blending concertina, keyboard, harmonium, cittern, stomp box, acoustic guitar and banjo with their beautiful and closely intertwined vocal harmonies.

With latest album ‘Wild Goose’ they traverse the realms of the mystical, spiritual, and supernatural. ‘They come over like a cosmic, contemporary Fairport Convention’ says Jude Rogers, The Guardian.

Recorded in their home on Dartmoor over the course of a year, this collection features uplifting arrangements, atmospheric laments, and a song about the Norse god of mischief, Loki. It’s an album of intricacy reflecting themes of family life, deep connection with nature, mind-over-matter, and mind-bending societal shifts.

The night will be opened by Freya’s ‘Wild Goose’ stunning acapella choir who will also join the duo towards the end of the gig.

Folk at The Flavel: Gigspanner.

'There’s something of the proverbial elder statesman about Peter Knight, in terms of his place in music, which cannot be overstated. It’s not just in the quality of his playing...there’s a focus on the sheer inventiveness of Peter’s playing, in the adventurous arrangements he shares with his collaborators, and in his musical leadership.'

Northern Sky Magazine

Since his inaugural performance with the fledgling Steeleye Span in 1970, Peter Knight has been a mainstay of the British folk scene. Never one to rest on his laurels, Peter has carved a reputation as a relentlessly questing musician 'as mercurial as quicksilver' (Simon Jones/fRoots), and it is never quite so apparent as in his work with the various Gigspanner line-ups.

In the wake of his departure from Steeleye Span, Peter turned his full attention to the Gigspanner Trio and established their reputation as one of the most genuinely ground-breaking forces on the British folk scene, inspiring Maverick magazine to write 'Gigspanner are pushing at the boundaries, and in the process are making some of the most beautiful music the genre has to offer' 5***** Maverick Magazine

Described by Folk Radio UK as one of the 'most quietly brilliant sets of musicians in the folk world and beyond', they take self-penned material along with music rooted in the British Isles and beyond, and with the flick of a bow, a finely chosen chord or slip of a beat, produce richly atmospheric arrangements 'with notes seemingly plucked from the stars and rhythms from the equator' (Spiral Earth).
